The Annual Report of the International Manganese Association EPD Conference (2022) (hereinafter referred to as the Report) was released in Nanning, Guangxi on the 9th. The Report points out that China is a major consumer of manganese ores. Affected by the dual control policy of energy consumption, China's silicomanganese alloy and electrolytic products will decline to varying degrees in 2022. However, with the vigorous development of new energy, the application of manganese in new energy has been greatly increased.
On the same day, the 13th International Manganese Electrolytic Products Market Summit Forum and the 18th International Manganese Electrolytic Products China Conference jointly sponsored by the International Manganese Association, the National Manganese Industry Technical Committee, the Guangxi Manganese Industry Association and the Southern Manganese Industry Group Co., Ltd. were held in Nanning, with a total of 250 experts, scholars and well-known enterprise representatives from France, Mexico, Japan, South Africa and other countries as well as the domestic manganese industry attending the meeting. Li Weijian, chairman of the Electrolytic Products Committee of the International Manganese Association and chairman of the Manganese Branch of the China Mining Federation, released the above-mentioned Report at the meeting.
According to the Report, global consumption will recover slowly in 2022. The global manganese output will reach 58.8 million tons. The main producing countries are South Africa, Gabon, Australia, etc. Gabon surpassed Australia for the first time.
According to the Report, the output of manganese ore in China will reach 6.45 million tons in 2022, of which Guangxi, Guizhou and Hunan are the top provinces. Manganese ore is mainly used in the steel industry, and more than 90% is used in the production of silicomanganese alloy and ferromanganese alloy. The remaining manganese ore is mainly used for the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide, manganese sulfate and other products (calculated by metal content).
It is worth noting that from the consumption of manganese ore in China in 2022, the application of manganese in lithium ion batteries has increased significantly, more than 1%.
Tao Mingju, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Mining Federation, said at the meeting that day that manganese is a bulk raw material mineral necessary for industrial production, a basic material for the steel industry, and an important raw material to support the development of new energy, new materials and other emerging industries. However, at present, China's external dependence on some strategic minerals, including manganese ore, has remained high all year round.
To this end, Tao Mingju suggested that under the new situation, China should fully stimulate the vitality of market entities, mobilize the enthusiasm of geological prospecting units, mining enterprises and social capital to participate in prospecting, and form a number of new mineral lands and resource reserves for development and utilization. At the same time, we should accelerate the "going out" of the industry, participate in global resource allocation, and make good use of the new opportunities brought by international production capacity cooperation. At the same time, we should abandon the extensive business model and accelerate the construction of industrial structure and production mode with low resource consumption, high technology content and low environmental pollution.
Tao Mingju said that at present, with the continuous development of the country's new energy and new materials fields, the demand for manganese products is increasingly strong, especially new energy vehicles and power batteries, which bring new opportunities and development space for the deep processing and transformation of manganese. Manganese industry personnel should do a good job in multi-industry integration with new materials industry, manufacturing industry, financial industry and other industries, and coordinate innovation to form a complete industrial chain and supply chain, move forward to the middle and high end of the value chain, and vigorously promote industrial transformation and upgrading.
