Alias: Tri-n-butyltin oxide, Bis(tri-n-butyltin) oxide, Bis(tri-n-butyltin) oxide, Hexabutyldistannoxane, butinox, HBD. It is a metal-organic compound.
Tributyltin oxide is a colourless or yellowish oily liquid at room temperature, insoluble in water, soluble in common organic solvents. It is non-corrosive, sensitive to water and acid, and easily reacts with acidic substances. Emits pungent and irritating gases containing stannides when decomposed by heat.
Tributyltin oxide is a highly toxic compound and is toxic if swallowed. Irritates eyes and skin.
It is highly toxic to aquatic organisms and may have long-term adverse effects on the aquatic environment, and has been listed as one of the 15 substances of very high concern (REACH) under the EU REACH directive.
Main uses.
Tributyltin oxide is highly bioactive and is used in the synthesis of α,β-unsaturated methyl ketones, isoxazoles, antifoulants for marine paints, fumigants, disinfectants, fungicides, algaecides, mould inhibitors, etc. Ethyl is used in the synthesis of organotin polymer resins; it is also used as a catalyst in polymerisation reactions. In agriculture, it is used as a fungicide and has strong bactericidal properties. It is used as a protective agent in the wood, paper, textile and whitewash industries.
