Tetra-n-butylstannane, also known as butyltin, is a metal-organic compound.
Colorless or yellowish oily liquid, insoluble in water, soluble in most organic solvents.
Main uses
(1) Used as a catalyst: tetrabutyltin is used as a catalyst for the synthesis of plasticizers, polyurethane, silicone, polyester, alkyd resin, etc.
(2) Used as a heat stabilizer for plastics: The main application of tetrabutyltin is as a stabilizer for PVC. The principle of its action is that butyltin first coordinates with the chlorine atoms on the PVC molecular chain, and as it can capture the hydrogen chloride removed, it can prevent auto-catalysis and replace the unstable chlorine atoms in PVC to prevent PVC degradation. Tributyltin has good stability and is suitable for high temperature processing; good weather resistance and is suitable for outdoor products; good transparency and is suitable for making transparent or brightly coloured products. Tetrabutyltin is very compatible with PVC and is used in a large number of PVC pipes in the USA. The FDA, BGA and BPF in Western Europe and HPA in Japan have approved butyltin stabilisers for food packaging materials, medical plastic products and beverage bottles. Butyltin is an important heat stabilizer in PVC rigid sheets, especially transparent PVC rigid sheets, which plays a good role in the thermal stability, transparency, anti-aging and prolonging the life of PVC products. From the future development, the heavy metal salt heat stabilizer toxic to human beings will be restricted to use.
(3) for anti-fouling paint: organic tin compounds can be used in anti-fouling paint, its role in the principle of organic tin paint and vinyl resin or chlorinated rubber, etc. to form a solid solvent, in the base material to disperse evenly, when the surface of the paint film due to molecular diffusion of the base material into the seawater, the paint film inside the paint will be continuous outward diffusion, supplementing the amount of surface exudation therefore does not affect the smoothness, so that the hull speed running normal, reducing the friction with the water Therefore, its effective application is for underwater anti-fouling coating of ship hull.
(4) Others: The development of tetrabutyltin applications is very impressive, and its applications include pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, wood preservatives, ink additives, plastic foaming agents, etc.; it is commonly used abroad as a broad-spectrum disinfectant, etc. As research progresses, there are many areas in which its application will be further expanded.
